I had a great Dad Moment this week.
The remnants of Hurricane Isaac blew through Cincinnati over the last couple of days. And, on Labor Day morning, I was out in the pouring rain, digging a little mini-trench for the water overflowing my clogged gutter to flow away from my house. When I got done, I was already wet and a little muddy. Our air conditioner broke a couple days earlier, so it was cooler outside in the rain than it was in the house. In a moment of inspiration, I asked my wife to send the boys out in their swimsuits. So, we played in the rain – stomping in puddles, then playing a little football, then we got out these cheap cans of shaving cream that my daughter didn’t get to use at camp (that’s another story) and we had a shaving cream fight!
At dinner, sometimes my wife will ask everyone what the best part of their day was. For at least three of us that day, it was playing in the rain. In fact, I’d say it was a highlight of the summer. And, to top it off, we went to Creamy Whip for ice cream that night.
Summer is basically over (though it doesn’t feel that way in my house), but I think you still have time to squeeze in one or two Dad Moments like this. How about it? Have you been promising to take the kids to a movie (The Avengers is at the cheap theatres now) or a baseball game? How about chasing down the ice cream truck before it turns off that really obnoxious music for the winter? Go for it!
