They say if you want to be rich, do what rich people do. If you want your company to be successful, do what successful companies do. In some cases, I agree. But, have you ever noticed the companies and people that, after they went from good to great, went from great to good and maybe even on to average, below average, and perhaps downright crappy?
The problem is that many successful people (companies, organizations, etc.), once they get successful, they go into R.A.M. – Risk Avoidance Mode. They think, OK, we’re great. Now we have to make sure we DON’T SCREW IT UP! So, they proceed to stop doing everything that made them great to begin with – taking risks, failing, getting up, trying again… They set up “best practices” and write 200-page handbooks and procedural manuals. And before you know it, no one is allowed to think for himself except “the boss” and he has yes-men surrounding him who refuse to challenge him when he has obviously tapped out his ability to think creatively.
In short, they play it safe.
I think you need to do what successful people DID to get successful. For instance, have you ever noticed that nearly every successful person says something like, “Don’t do it the way I did it… I wish I’d known these 10 things when I started… Blah, blah, blah…” Every time I hear someone successful say something like that I think, Yeah, but you made it. Did you ever think that if you had made sure all your ducks were in a row so you wouldn’t make all the mistakes you made that you might not have taken the leaps you took to make it in the first place?
So, what should you do? Are you scared of getting married because you’re not sure how you’re going to make it? Go for it. Commit to making it work. Realize what a life-long commitment is. Then, man up and do it! Married already and afraid of having a kid? Give it a shot. Trust me when I say you will never be prepared for parenthood, but it’s worth it. Are you wondering whether you can launch your business this year? Set the deadline and plow ahead.
Are you playing it safe?
What could you do to move toward greatness?
